Theme: City of Man

Inspired by the game of pick-up sticks (known in Italy as "Shanghai"), the Italy Pavilion comprises 20 different geometrical shapes, each bound by "sticks" symbolizing Italy's different regions and the diversity of Italian culture. Italy's green technologies, rich variety of architecture, contemporary arts and fine cuisine are all on display in the pavilion's thematic rooms. A cutting-edge construction material known as "transparent cement" was used to build the pavilion.

Latvia

Theme: Innovation City of Science and Technology

The fa?ade of the Latvia Pavilion is composed of 100,000 colorful plastic plates that are intended to symbolize the country's diversity and bountiful natural resources. The entrance of the pavilion is spiral-shaped, symbolizing the progressive development of humanity. The pavilion's central exhibit is a wind tunnel that was pioneered by the military and later converted for recreational use by skydivers.

Luxembourg

Theme: Small Is Beautiful

The Luxembourg Pavilion, made of steel, glass and wood, looks like a beautiful castle surrounded by flourishing forests. The design idea came from the literal translation of the Chinese name for Luxembourg (lu sen bao). In Chinese, sen means "forest" and bao means "castle." Luxembourg also brought its national treasure, the sculpture Gella Fra, all the way to Shanghai just for the Expo. Luxembourg's pavilion showcases its key role as the strategic gateway to the European market as well as the country's picturesque landscapes and charming cultural traditions.
