Customs Snare Ivory Haul
Officers from Shanghai Customs announced Wednesday that they have uncovered China's biggest ivory smuggling case since 1949, in which 3,334.6 kg of African ivory was seized at the Waigaoqiao Port in Pudong District.
?Foreign Talent? to Join in Shanghai?s Decision-making

Beijing urged Taiwan authorities to take immediate action against Falun Gong groups in Taipei on Wednesday, to avoid further damaging already strained cross-Strait relations. Falun Gong cult devotees are accused of disrupting Sino Satellite (SINOSAT) transmissions since September 8.
Five Suspects Detained over School Tragedy
Five officials were charged and detained Wednesday over their association with a middle school tragedy leaving 21 students dead and 47 injured. The tragedy occurred at 6.50 pm Monday at Fengzhen?s No. 2 Middle School in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. A guardrail along stairs inside the school building gave way as students poured out of classes at the end of the day.
Beijing Rejects Cement in Ancient Wall Renovations
The renovation project for the Ming Dynasty?s (1368-1644) City Wall in Beijing has entered its concluding stages, with the final touches being applied. The Ming Dynasty City Wall Ruins Park is expected to open to the public before October 1. Re-construction workers have been using gray plaster to lay bricks, instead of cement which would normally be used in such situations.
