Established in 1895 as Peiyang University, Tianjin University (TJU) was China's first university and plays an important role in modern Chinese higher education. Over the past 117 years, more than 200,000 students have studied at the university and made great contributions in all walks of life. At present, the school has a working staff of more than 4,600 and a total student population of 25,000 with 9500 doctoral and master's students.
