Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing held talks Tuesday with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on the sidelines of the 60th session of the UN General Assembly.

Li stressed that the Taiwan issue is the most sensitive and most important issue between China and the US.

China appreciated the commitments US President George W. Bush reiterated in talks with President Hu Jintao in New York earlier this month on adhering to the one-China policy and observing the three Sino-US joint communiqués, Li noted.

China hoped that the US side will adhere to its commitments and cooperated with the Chinese side to maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits and promote the Sino-US relationship.

Rice said the US side understands the sensitivity of the Taiwan issue, and will not change its one-China policy.

The two leaders said both China and the US will cooperate with each other to implement the important consensus reached between the heads of state of the two countries recently, and further strengthen the constructive and cooperative relations between the two countries.

They also spoke highly of the achievement reached during the fourth-round six-party talks held in Beijing, and exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.
