Li, Annan Talk on UN Reforms

Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing talked with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan yesterday on UN reforms.

Meeting the UN chief on the sidelines of the 60th session of the UN General Assembly, Li said the Outcome Document adopted at the UN summit reflects the consensus of member states to strengthen the UN role through reforms, and shows clearly the direction of the UN development in the future.

Member states should translate the Outcome Document into action as soon as possible with focus on the implementation of the commitments, he noted.

Li stressed that China supports the reform of the Security Council aimed at strengthening its authority and efficiency and improving its working methods.

Describing the UN summit as very successful, Annan said the Outcome Document is the basis for the coming UN reforms.

He spoke highly of China's leading role in enhancing international support for developing countries, noting that what China has done for developing countries is of great significance.

Also on Monday, Li met with his counterparts from Britain, France, Israel and countries of the Rio Group and exchanged views with them on bilateral ties, the current international situation and the reform of the UN.
