China's and Russia's efforts on the Syria issue are sincere and worth positive response from related parties in Syria, an Omani newspaper says.

China and Russia voted against two UN draft resolutions on the Syria crisis because they believe that foreign military intervention in Syria will bring unpredictable and catastrophic results, Alwatan said in a recent editorial.

The two countries voted last week against a UN General Assembly draft resolution on Syria, out of their opposition to armed intervention or forced "regime change" in Syria.

The resolution was similar to a draft vetoed in the UN Security Council on Feb. 4 by Russia and China, two permanent members of the 15-nation body. The killed draft asked Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to hand over power to his deputy.

History shows that China and Russia have been supporting the Arab people and their just cause for decades, while Europe and the United States sowed the seeds of division, difference and conflicts in the Arab region, the paper noted.

China's and Russia's voting against the resolutions, proposed by the West and some Arab countries, was not pointed at the Syrian people, it said.

Using their veto power does not go against China's and Russia's policies, which have always championed peaceful dialogues as the best way to resolve problems and differences, the paper said.

It added that the two countries have never stopped persuading related parties in Syria to have contacts and conduct negotiations in an effort to prevent foreign military intervention, safeguard territorial integrity and national unity of Syria and realize the wishes and pursuits of the Syrian government and opposition.

On Saturday, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zhai Jun met Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and opposition groups to urge related parties to immediately and fully end all acts of violence. Such praiseworthy efforts have showed China's sincerity, the editorial said.

In the end, the paper said it hopes the sober people in Syria and other Arab countries can follow the path mapped out by China and Russia to help Syria recover from the current crisis.
