Rising from the continental shelf off the southeastern coast of the Chinese mainland, Taiwan comprises a total land area of 36,000 square kilometers. China's largest island, Taiwan consists of Taiwan Island and other smaller appertaining islands, such as Diaoyu and the Penghu Islands. Thus, including a total of 88 islands, Taiwan is known as "China's province of islands."
On July 4, 2008, the first weekend charter flights flew across the Taiwan Strait carrying enthusiastic mainland tourists. The flight signaled that Taiwan's tourism market is expected to further expand and benefit from a new phase of development.
Taiwan, gifted with breathtaking scenery, splendid folk culture and countless other charms, certainly has much to offer visitors from at home and abroad.
