Germany coach Joachim Loew ensured a few surprises at the presentation of the provisional World Cup squad in Frankfurt on Thursday.

Joachim Loew announced his 30-man squad at the DFB Headquarter. He will fix his final 23-man squad before June 2.

The German coach affirmed, "form and fitness were the criterions for the nomination". However, Loew made an exception with Real Madrid's Sami Khedira who is on the road to fully recover from an ACL. "The nomination of Khedira is a calculated risk but personality and experience are indespensable for our squad."

Joachim Loew assembled a team composed of tried and tested personal and youngsters. "We appointed players with prospects. Players, that showed great performances and became the focus of attention."

The 54-year-old coach surprised with the appointment of four youngsters, namely, Dortmund's Eric Durm who earned his first-ever call up, Hoffenheim's Kevin Volland, Schalke's Leon Goretzka and his teammate Max Meyer.

Besides that Fiorentina's striker Mario Gomez and former Monchengladbach custodian Marc Andre ter Stegen were not selected. "Mario Gomez was injured for nearly seven months. I don't think he will be capable of surviving in competition. With reference to the goalkeepers we decided to call up two experienced and one prospect custodian for the World Cup."

The Germans will play three friendlies ahead of the World Cup, one before and two after their 10-day trainings camp in South Tirol. The "Nationalelf" host Poland in Hamburg, Cameroon in Dusseldorf and Armenia in Mainz before they depart from Frankfurt international airport in the direction of Santo Andre, Brazil on June 7.
