| The People's Bank of China raised its benchmark one-year interest rates by 0.25% on Oct. 20, the first time since the financial crisis almost three years ago, Xinhua reports. | In the wake of the economic recovery, China has tried to limit new credit issued by banks and introduced measures to discourage speculation in the property sector. One explanation for the rate hike, argues the Financial Times, is the September inflation figures due to be published later this week could be higher than expected, while the Q3 growth would also exceed forecasts.
