On my behalf and on behalf of the European Union (EU) I would like to wish to all the Chinese people in the beginning of the year of tiger.

I wanted to wish you a very happy Chinese New Year as we enter the year of the Tiger, a year traditionally associated with good fortune and power.

In this auspicious year, the Government will continue to promote the values we share in common with the thriving Chinese community: a belief in hard work, enterprise, community spirit and strong families.

I am pleased too that through the Government’s plans to expand the teaching of Mandarin in our schools, children will, including in some cases in primary school, learn of the magnificent contribution of Chinese culture to the world.
