Harvard scholars gather to talk about the future
Adjust font size:

The 2008 Harvard Alumni Association Global Series Conference was held in the city over the weekend.

The annual conference brought together more than 600 Harvard faculties and alumni from all over the world to discuss academic topics in science and technology, health, environmental protection and initiatives shaping Harvard's future.

Drew Faust, the first woman president in Harvard's 371-year history, met Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng before the conference's opening session on Saturday.

Wan Gang, China's Minister of Science and Technology, delivered a speech about the role of science, technology and innovation in China's economy and development at Saturday's opening plenary session.

"Harvard has been a cradle for outstanding professionals for centuries, which has a great impact on the whole world," Wan said, "China should also build on its innovative tradition and strengthen cooperation with countries all over the world."

Han noted in his address that Harvard alumni were welcome to make suggestions to Shanghai's development and preparation for the 2010 World Expo.

The Harvard Alumni Association Global Series is a major component for the university's efforts to maintain connections with alumni worldwide. The conferences feature a mix of social activities and academic endeavors, such as panel discussions with Harvard faculties and HAA travel programs.

It is the second time Harvard has held an international conferences in the city. The Harvard Project for Asian and International Relations Conference was held here in 2004.
