The flood that plagued southwest China's Yunnan Province has triggered many cave-ins, landslides and mudslides, leaving 147 hidden geological disasters and threatening the safety of about 1,980 people.

Heavy rainstorms hit Hekou County last Saturday, on the border with Vietnam, hurting the livelihood of more than 8,800 people, said Ye Cuiping, the county's party chief.

The rainstorm-triggered disasters left four deaths. Transport, power and communication facilities were severely damaged, causing 160 million yuan in loss.

Torrential rain hit the county again on Thursday. No report of damage was immediately available.

Ye said the county was prone to geological hazards. It was badly in need of funds and materials for evacuating the affected people.

Downpours struck 11 prefectures and cities in Yunnan in the past few days, causing landslides, floods and mud-rock flows. As of late Tuesday, the disasters had left 40 dead, six missing and 42 injured with 1.25 million people affected, the Yunnan Civil Affairs Department said.

The total losses reached 746 million yuan (US$108 million.)

The provincial and local governments had allocated 10 million yuan in relief, both in funds and materials such as tents, quilts and clothing.
