Taking a Walk down Memory Lane of Old Shanghai
Twenty photographs showing life in the old Shanghai are being shown in the Unique Hill Studio.

Following his interest in the subject, Hill Jiang, the owner of Unique Hill Studio, spent more than 20 years collecting hundreds of photographs. These carefully selected pictures vividly depict the early modernity of Shanghai in 1920s and 1930s.

Shanghai gradually evolved into an exciting port city after the First Opium War (1840-1842). "Deeply influenced by cultures, decorative arts and dressing styles from Western countries, Shanghai formed its special personality during that era." Hill Jiang said.

Appearing in various attitudes, the people in the old pictures silently communicate to viewers about their sentiments and their lives. The refined and leisured lifestyle from the 1920s and 1930s can be relived when viewers appreciate the varied designs of their mandarin gowns and the way they made themselves up.

The fashion in that era was completely different from today's, due to the social environment. People in the pictures belonged to the leisured class at that time. These modern women led a rich and carefree life. Not only did they take the lead in fashion, but also contributed to the form of Shanghai's unique fashion style.

In the company of these old black and white pictures, reflecting on the old Shanghai with modern aesthetic tastes and imagining those past days takes the viewer on an unforgettable journey.
