Photos Bridge Cultures

Talented photographers often shoot photos that have far more meaning than as mere historical documentation. Romanian photographer George Ionita proves this with an exhibition of his works at the German Center in Beijing beginning today.

The photos in the exhibit were shot by Ionita in East China's Jiangsu Province and Germany's Nordrein-Westfalen (NRW).

They depict scenery and views about life in the two sister provinces, and emphasize similarities rather than differences between both nations and their peoples, said Governor of Jiangsu Province Ji Yunshi.

The show, co-hosted by the German Embassy, Jiangsu provincial government and the NRW China Liaison Office, is dedicated to the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the People's Republic of China and the Federal Republic of Germany.

The two-week exhibition also celebrates 15 years of partnership between the NRW and Jiangsu, and the fifth anniversary of the NRW China Liaison Office in Nanjing.

Yet to the photographer, his photos represent more than merely documenting history.

"I just want to record the moments, such as the concentration of children when playing cards or driving, and the concentration of women when working," said Ionita.

Although non-German and non-Chinese, the photographer said he is closely connected to both of the countries he has depicted in his photos. Ionita married a German woman who works with him in China.
