More than two thirds of the construction miracle that is China's Qinghai-Tibet Railway has been completed. 90% of the completed sections of the project have been evaluated as meeting the highest standards.

The construction of the world's highest railway project has to face three major difficulties: the perennially frozen earth area, environmental protection and medical care. The success of the project so far has proved these problems have been overcome.

Beginning construction on June 29, 2001, the railway will eventually go from Golmud in Qinghai, and stretch over a distance of 1,142 kilometers to end at Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. Along the route, 960 kilometers of rail line are over 4,000 meters above sea level.
