| On the day the Allied Forces occupied Beijing,
the powers appointed Field Marshal Waldersee, who was in Germany,
supreme commander of the Eight-Power Allied Forces. As soon
as Waldersee arrived in China in September, he led the Allied
Forces, mainly composed of German troops, to attack Shanhaiguan,
Baoding, Zhangjiakou and towns in Shangxi Province. The actions
were designed to put pressure on the Qing Government and force
it to make future concession so the powers could procure more
benefits. |
