ABU DHABI, July 30 (Xinhua) -- President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Wednesday urged an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the continued, unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to the enclave, state-run news agency WAM reported.
During a phone conversation between Sheikh Mohamed and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, both sides stressed the importance of supporting all initiatives aimed at promoting regional security and stability, and advancing toward a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace based on the two-state solution as a path to sustainable stability and a better future for the region's peoples, WAM reported.
On Starmer's recent remarks concerning Israel's military campaign in Gaza and Britain's intention to recognize the State of Palestine, Sheikh Mohamed said they were a positive step toward acknowledging the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, WAM reported.
The two sides also touched on ways to enhance bilateral cooperation, it reported.
On Tuesday, Starmer said Britain will recognize the State of Palestine at a UN meeting in September unless Israel takes substantive steps to end "the appalling situation in Gaza," agree to a ceasefire and commit to a long-term and sustainable peace.
Israel has been waging a massive war in Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, which has killed more than 60,000 people, injured more than 146,000, and caused significant destruction to buildings and infrastructure.
A total of 154 people, including 89 children, have died from starvation and malnutrition, Gaza-based health authorities said Wednesday.
The war followed a surprise attack launched by Hamas on southern Israel, which, according to Israeli authorities, resulted in the deaths of more than 1,200 people and the capture of 251 hostages. Enditem
