ISTANBUL, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Istanbul police detained 773 individuals and seized drugs, unlicensed firearms, and ammunition during a large-scale public security operation in the city, authorities announced on Wednesday.
The Istanbul Police Department's public security branch said the operation was supported by a police helicopter and several boats from the Marine Police Department on Tuesday evening.
The operation was carried out in two phases across the city, involving nearly 3,000 police officers. Fixed checkpoint inspections were followed by raids on public venues later in the evening.
During the operation, authorities conducted background checks on more than 358,000 individuals. Among those detained were 356 suspects wanted for various crimes.
Police also confiscated a variety of unlicensed firearms, ammunition, narcotics, drug pills, and a significant amount of money believed to be proceeds from drug sales.
The police department stated that such operations have become increasingly frequent across the city in recent months as part of efforts to combat rising crime and improve public safety. Enditem
