PREAH VIHEAR, Cambodia, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Foreign military attachés from 13 countries to Cambodia on Wednesday observed the implementation of a Cambodia-Thailand ceasefire agreement at An Ses border checkpoint here in northwest Cambodia.
The checkpoint borders Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani province.
At the site, the military attachés were briefed by Major General Chan Sopheaktra, commander of the Preah Vihear Military Operation Zone.
Sopheaktra said the Cambodian army was strictly adhering to the ceasefire agreement reached by leaders of the two nations.
Sopheaktra also said that Thai soldiers illegally captured 20 Cambodian solders on Tuesday morning, one of whom escaped, despite the ceasefire agreement officially going into effect.
In response, the Thai Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Wednesday, saying that Cambodian soldiers encroached upon Thai territory to launch armed attacks on Tuesday morning, which prompted Thai forces to exercise the right to self-defence and safeguarding territorial integrity.
Some Cambodian soldiers were wounded and surrendered, and they were then taken into custody, the statement said.
On July 24, clashes erupted between Cambodian and Thai soldiers in border areas.
The two countries agreed on an immediate and unconditional ceasefire on Monday afternoon, taking effect at midnight on Monday. Enditem
