CAIRO, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi on Wednesday welcomed Britain's intention to recognize a Palestinian state in September if Israel does not agree to a ceasefire in Gaza, calling it a step toward advancing the two-state solution.
"I highly value the statements made by Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, regarding the UK's intentions to recognize the State of Palestine," said the Egyptian president on his official Facebook page.
"I look forward to the UK taking this historic decision as soon as possible without restriction or preconditions," Sisi added.
He reaffirmed Egypt's longstanding position that a just and comprehensive resolution of the Palestinian issue is the only path toward achieving sustainable peace in the Middle East.
On Tuesday, British Prime Minister Starmer said that his nation will recognize the State of Palestine at a United Nations meeting in September unless Israel takes substantive steps to end "the appalling situation in Gaza", agree to a ceasefire and commit to a long-term and sustainable peace.
Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that France would officially recognize the State of Palestine during the upcoming 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September. Enditem
