LOS ANGELES, July 30 (Xinhua) -- A massive earthquake struck off the coast of Russia Tuesday, sparking tsunami alerts in the United States, including Alaska, Hawaii, Guam and the West Coast.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a tsunami warning was announced for Alaska's Aleutian Islands and Hawaii. Meanwhile, California, Oregon, Washington, the U.S. territories of Guam and American Samoa are under a tsunami advisory.
In the United States, the tsunami alert has four types, including a tsunami information statement, a watch, an advisory, and a warning.
A tsunami advisory means that a tsunami with the potential to generate strong currents or waves to those in or near the water is imminent, expected, or occurring. During this alert, the public should stay out of the water and away from beaches and waterways.
A tsunami warning is issued when a tsunami with the potential to generate widespread inundation is imminent, expected, or occurring. During this alert, the public should move to high ground or inland.
Shortly after 0730 GMT, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said waves of up to 1.7 meters were impacting the Hawaiian islands.
The tsunami warning is still in effect in Hawaii, as authorities warned residents of returning to tsunami-affected areas. "The threat is still active. Keep emergency lines open for those who truly need help," said the Kauai Police Department.
Sirens were going off on all Hawaii islands as a part of their statewide warning system, while people are urged to evacuate coastal areas. Residents in Honolulu, the capital city of Hawaii, are urged to evacuate the primary evacuation zone or head to at least the fourth floor of a building. Enditem
