LONDON, June 15 (Xinhua) -- The British Foreign Office on Sunday elevated its travel advisory for Israel to the highest red alert level, warning citizens against all travel to the country.
Previously set at the amber tier - advising against all but essential travel - the guidance has now been upgraded to the red tier, which urges citizens to avoid all travel.
The decision follows an announcement by the British government that it is deploying additional air forces to the region as a "precautionary measure" amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.
Earlier, Iran issued a stark warning to Britain, the United States, and France, stating it would target their military bases and naval assets in the region if they intervened to defend Israel against Iranian retaliatory strikes.
Local media report that thousands of British nationals are currently in Israel. In response to the deteriorating security situation, British authorities are said to be drafting contingency plans for a potential evacuation. Enditem
