BEIRUT, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese Defence Minister Michel Menassah on Thursday called for the renewal of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mandate without amendments, citing the mission's critical role in maintaining stability along the country's southern border.
"Renewing UNIFIL's mandate without modifications is essential to preserving the peace your mission has upheld for decades," Menassah said during a visit to UNIFIL headquarters in Naqoura, southern Lebanon. "We hope efforts to renew the mandate succeed, ensuring the continuity of your vital work in Lebanon."
In 2024, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2749, extending UNIFIL's mandate until August 31.
Menassah reaffirmed Lebanon's commitment to fully implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war between Hezbollah and Israel. He also reiterated the Lebanese Army's readiness to cooperate with UNIFIL to restore calm, facilitate the return of displaced civilians, and support reconstruction.
Although a ceasefire agreement between Hezbollah and Israel has been in place since Nov. 27, 2024, Israel has continued to launch strikes in southern Lebanon.
On Thursday, one person was killed in an Israeli drone strike in the southern city of Nabatieh, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry's Public Health Emergency Operations Center. Enditem
