DAMASCUS, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Syria's foreign affairs authorities on Tuesday condemned Israeli artillery shelling in southern Daraa province as a "blatant violation of Syrian sovereignty," and urged international intervention to halt what they termed "escalating aggression."
In a statement released via state-run media, the Syrian interim authorities, established after the fall of President Bashar al-Assad's government, said they had not yet verified reports of a rocket launched from Syrian territory towards the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. They stressed that "numerous actors may seek to destabilize the region to serve their own interests."
"Our top priority in the south remains extending the authority of the state and eliminating the presence of weapons outside official institutions," the statement added.
It also called on the international community "to assume its responsibilities in halting repeated Israeli attacks" and support stability efforts.
Earlier on Tuesday, an IDF statement said two rockets were launched from Syria towards Israeli settlements in the southern Golan Heights, triggering air raid sirens in Ramat Magshimim and Haspin. The rockets exploded in open areas without causing injuries, the IDF said. Israeli media reported these were the first projectiles fired from Syria against Israeli targets since Assad's government collapsed in December 2024.
"In response, IDF artillery struck the sources of the fire in southern Syria," the Israeli military statement added.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz stated that "we hold the Syrian leader directly responsible for any threat and firing at Israel, and the full response will come soon."
Israel seized the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war and later annexed it in a move not recognized by most of the international community. Enditem
