BELGRADE, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Serbian Prime Minister Djuro Macut reaffirmed on Monday that advancing Serbia's European Union accession remains the government's top priority, pledging to accelerate reforms and the negotiation process during his mandate.
Following a meeting in Belgrade with visiting European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, Macut stated that Serbia would step up efforts to open new negotiating clusters, particularly Cluster 3, which focuses on education, science, culture, and information.
"Serbia is among the countries with the longest experience in the EU accession process. Accelerating the opening of new clusters, particularly Cluster 3, will be one of the fundamental tasks of my government," Macut said at a joint press conference.
Macut, who was elected prime minister earlier this month, acknowledged that accession negotiations had slowed over the past three years but stressed that Serbia had continued to implement reforms to strengthen the rule of law, judicial independence, and the fight against corruption.
He said these reforms would be deepened through legislative initiatives, especially in the fields of education and science.
Kos welcomed Serbia's reaffirmed commitment, describing the country as having much to contribute to Europe. "We now have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to complete the unification of Europe. Serbia, with its rich history and innovative people, must seize this moment by accelerating reforms," Kos said. Enditem
