JERUSALEM, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Türkiye's flag carrier Turkish Airlines decided to cancel its flight routes to Israel, the Israel Airports Authority (IAA) said on Monday.
The airline suspended flights to Israel after the outbreak of the multi-front conflict in October 2023, and these routes have not been reinstated due to the continued fighting.
On Monday, Turkish Airlines notified the IAA that it was relinquishing its slots at Ben Gurion International Airport, signaling a long-term cancellation of its routes between Tel Aviv and Türkiye's Istanbul and Antalya.
Flight slots are permissions granted by the airport authority for an airline to land and take off on a particular day and within a specific time frame. It also grants the airline access to airport services and infrastructure.
According to IAA data, Turkish Airlines was one of the busiest foreign full-service airlines in Israel before the conflict. Before the war, it operated 10 daily flights between Istanbul and Tel Aviv, and five weekly flights between Tel Aviv and the resort city of Antalya.
Meanwhile, British carrier Virgin Atlantic announced Monday the cancellation of its services between London Heathrow Airport and Tel Aviv.
The airline, which also halted flights in October 2023, had originally planned to resume operations in October this year.
The airline added that it will continue to serve Tel Aviv through its codeshare partnership with Israel's national carrier, El Al. Enditem
