Indonesia will seek to extend the implementation period of Kyoto Protocol at the international climate change conference in December in Doha, Qatar, Climate Change National Council (DNPI) Chairman Rahmat Witoelar said Friday.

"Kyoto Protocol is scheduled to expire in 2012. What should we do next with it. This protocol must be extended so as to attain global agreement," Rahmat said after opening a youth green event "Youth for Climate Camp 2012" .

Kyoto Protocol, which was adopted by the parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in December 1997 in Kyoto, Japan, set binding targets for 37 industrialized countries and the European Union to cut greenhouse gas emissions by an average of five percent against 1990 levels over the five-year period 2008-2012.

Rahmat said that if the delegations prefer to replace the Kyoto Protocol with other mechanism, the new mechanism would refer to " Bali Road Map" and "Bali Action Plan" that were approved in Bali in December 2007.

Bali Road Map mandated developed countries to provide 100 billion U.S. dollars to 120 developing countries in assistance with their efforts to address climate change impact. Endi
