Initiative launched to increase climate transparency

The UNFCCC Secretariat and the Chinese IT company Lvdoya launch an intelligent climate and eco-civilization initiative at COP28 in Dubai, UAE on Dec. 3, 2023.

The Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Chinese IT company Lvdoya launched an intelligent climate and eco-civilization initiative in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), on Dec. 3, 2023.

The project was started at a side event held at the China Pavilion during the ongoing 28th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP28) in the UAE city.

This initiative aims to mobilize partners to take action toward carbon neutrality. Its participants are requested to annually submit data and information regarding their climate action, including goals, action commitments, and progress, to the UNFCCC Secretariat through the Lvdoya platform.

It is considered a significant non-governmental accomplishment aligning with the COP28 theme of transparency.

At the launch ceremony, Xie Zhenhua, China's special envoy for climate change, indicated his appreciation of the initiative, which uses digital means to promote international information sharing. He added that it also strengthens communication and collaboration among all parties to the climate action.

Xie expressed his hope that subnational governments, institutions, and enterprises in China can use this platform to share Chinese practices and experiences in climate action with global partners, listen to the voices of the world, and encourage more global partners to participate. Those present at the ceremony included Hanan Bakr Sakr, head of Private Sector Engagement team for the UAE Climate Change Special Envoy office for COP28; Todd Edwards, leader of the team on aggregating and tracking climate action regarding UNFCCC; and Lian Xirui, founder and CEO of Lvdoya. They all made it clear that they would work together to call on more subnational governments in China and Chinese enterprises to share information related to their climate action.

A roundtable discussion on the initiative was held at the launch ceremony, gathering representatives of Chinese municipal governments, enterprises and institutes.

According to Lian, Lvdoya has long been committed to promoting in-depth interactions and collaboration between Chinese enterprises and the international community. The company emphasizes sharing information across multiple parties and integrating experiences and knowledge of urban governance. It aims to attract additional partners to the project to spearhead the global environmental governance.
