Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al- Maliki said Thursday that his country opposes any Western military action on Syria to punish Damascus' alleged use of chemical weapons.

At his meeting with U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Robert Beecroft in Baghdad, al-Maliki affirmed Iraq's support for a political solution to the Syrian crisis and its opposition to any military action, according to a statement posted on al-Maliki's official website.

The Iraqi leader told Beecroft that his country is worried about possible serious complications in the region caused by any military intervention in Syria.

Al-Maliki also stressed the necessity to increase consultation and coordination between Iraq and the United States on all levels, the statement said.

The United States, France and Britain have claimed there was enough proof of a chemical strike last week near Damascus by Syrian President Bashar Assad's troops. A team of UN inspectors is currently investigating the possible use of chemical weapons in the country.
