Iran's First Vice President Mohammad- Reza Rahimi said the peace plan put forward by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is a step toward the establishment of stability in Syria, Press TV reported Wednesday.

When addressing the nation on Sunday, Assad presented what he described as a new peace plan to end the crisis in Syria, a move dismissed by his opponents as a ploy to cling on to power.

Assad offered a national reconciliation conference, elections and a new constitution, but also demanded that other countries must first stop helping the armed rebels.

Rahimi underlined Iran's support for the plan, saying that "The Islamic republic of Iran supports this stance and considers it a significant step toward the establishment of stability and security in Syria."

Terrorists and foreign countries should know that Syria wants peace and reforms and does not brook foreign interference in the country, Rahimi was quoted as saying in a telephone conversation with Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi on Tuesday.

The Syrian prime minister, for his part, praised Iran's support for the Syrian nation, adding that the Syrian people stand firmly against enemies and do not allow any foreign interference in their country.

Also, an Iranian lawmaker said Wednesday the plan proposed by Syrian president to resolve the country's crisis is based on the current realities of the Arab state, according to the Press TV.

Hossein Naqavi-Hosseini said that foreign countries are supporting terrorists in Syria and providing them with weapons, while the Syrian people are standing by their country.

"Terrorists will never overcome the Syrian people and government," Naqavi-Hosseini said, adding that Assad has considered the reality that the ongoing war in Syria is between foreign powers on one side and the Syrian people and government on the other side.

Iran is the major regional ally of the Syrian government in its conflict with armed opposition groups.
