Chinese President Hu Jintao met his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama Tuesday in Los Cabos, Mexico, on bilateral relations and major regional and global issues of common concern.

During the meeting, the 12th between Hu and Obama, the Chinese leader put forward a four-point proposal on forging a new model of great power relations between the two countries.

First, the two sides should continue dialogues and enhance mutual trust, Hu said, adding that they should maintain high-level strategic communication, which serves as a guiding and driving force of bilateral ties, through visits, meetings, telephone conversations and letters.

Second, he said, the two countries should deepen win-win cooperation both in such traditional fields as commerce, investment, law enforcement, education and technology and in such new sectors as energy, environment and infrastructure construction.

The Chinese president also urged the two sides to boost subnational communication and cooperation and expand exchanges in politics, economy, security and culture among others.

Third, the two countries should properly manage their differences and ward off interferences, Hu said, expressing the hope that the United States would adopt a positive and pragmatic China policy.

He called upon the U.S. side to prevent domestic politics from disturbing China-U.S. ties, support the peaceful development of the relations across the Taiwan Strait with concrete action, and ensure the the stability of the China-U.S relationship in a U.S. election year.

Fourth, the two nations should jointly undertake international responsibilities and meet global challenges, Hu said, adding that China is ready to continue frank dialogues and pragmatic cooperation with the United States and boost mutual trust so as to keep a healthy interaction in the Asia-Pacific region.

China, he said, expects the Unites States to respect China's interests and concerns, and is open to further communication and coordination with the United States on hot-button regional issues.

For his part, Obama agreed with Hu's outlook on the next phase of the bilateral relationship, saying that his country is willing to build upon the existing achievements and push U.S.-China relations further forward.

The United States, he said, stands ready to work with China to cultivate a new model of great power relations so as to construct an important platform for the two sides to further promote their ties and effectively tackle global challenges.

A prosperous and stable China is in the interests of the United States and the world, just as a prosperous and growing United States benefits China and the world, he said.

On bilateral trade, Hu said that as the United States and China are the world's largest two economies, maintaining a robust trade relationship between them is of great significance both to themselves and to the world economy.

With its 12th five-year plan under implementation, China attaches great importance to boosting domestic demand and has full confidence in sustaining the strong momentum of its economic growth, Hu said.

The two countries should seize opportunities, further tap their potentials and strive together to lift bilateral economic cooperation and trade to a higher level, the Chinese president added.

The China-U.S. relationship has seen increasing global influence and strategic significance, and China is ready to work with the U.S. side to forge a cooperative partnership and steer bilateral relations further forward, Hu said.

A sound, stable and fruitful China-U.S. relationship not only serves the fundamental interests of the two countries but contributes to regional and global peace and development, he added.

Obama voiced sincere appreciation of Hu's leading role in the development of a U.S.-China cooperative partnership as well as in the G20 framework.

The two leaders met on the sidelines of the seventh summit of the G20, which convened Monday and Tuesday in this Mexican resort city and focused on global growth and stability.
