China and the Republic of Korea (ROK) on Wednesday reiterated that maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and realizing the lasting political stability of northeast Asia are in line with the common interests of relevant parties.

The reiteration was made in the joint press communique signed by China and the ROK during ROK President Lee Myung-bak's three-day visit to China.

Both sides agreed to make joint efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region and realize lasting political stability, the communique said.

China and the ROK expressed their hopes of working together with the international community to create conditions to resume the Six-Party Talks.

The two countries reiterated support for improving relations between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the ROK through dialogue and negotiation, and boosting reconciliation and cooperation in order to finally realize peaceful unification on the Korean Peninsula, the communique stated.

The two sides recognized that beefing up regional cooperation in east Asia is significant for realizing peace, stability and development in the region. They agreed to sign an investment treaty as soon as possible and make efforts to push for the construction of a free-trade area among China, ROK and Japan.

China and the ROK pledged to keep close communication and cooperation under the regional cooperative mechanisms of China-ROK-Japan cooperation, the 10+3, the East Asia Summit (EAS), the ASEAN Regional Forums (ARF), the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) and APEC.

China supports the ROK's successful hosting of the 2012 Seoul Nuclear Summit, the 2012 Yeosu Korea World Expo, the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon and the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

Both countries acknowledged that the Group of 20 (G20) has an important role in facing the world economy and financial crisis and realizing the strong, sustainable and balanced growth of the world economy. China and the ROK decided to continue strengthening their cooperation in the G20.

The two sides reiterated that the United Nations (UN) should play a central role in resolving global issues, the communique said, and they agreed to keep close cooperation in the affairs of the UN.

They also agreed to boost cooperation in fighting international terrorism, drug trafficking, piracy, financial fraud and cyber crime.
