Former Haitian President Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier returned Sunday surprisingly to Port-au-Prince after long exile as the island nation is still coping with the aftermath of the devastating earthquake one year ago.

Duvalier, who was toppled in a coup in 1986 and had been living in exile in France, arrived on an Air France jet at the Port-au-Prince airport and was greeted by his followers.

Duvalier did not make a statement upon arrival. While he told reporters "I come to help," the motive for his unexpected return remains unknown.

Duvalier succeeded his father Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier when he died in 1971.

During his administration, "Baby Doc" Duvalier took some "reform" steps, such as releasing political prisoners and easing press censorship. But he and his family were accused of plundering millions of dollars from the State funds.

Currently, Haiti is facing a political crisis as the presidential runoff has been postponed indefinitely due to an alleged electoral fraud.

Meanwhile, a cholera epidemic, which has killed more than 3,650 Haitians, has made the country's reconstruction more difficult.
