The United States is firmly committed to the defense of South Korea, the White House said on Tuesday.

The comment came after South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Tuesday exchanged fires in waters off the west coast of the divided Korean Peninsula.

"The United States is firmly committed to the defense of our ally, the Republic of Korea, and to the maintenance of regional peace and stability," the statement added.
