Final results from Sunday's referendum showed that a new constitution was adopted by 90.55 percent of the Kyrgyz voters, the official Kabar news agency reported on Thursday.

Only 8.07 percent of voters voted against the charter and the turnout reached 72.25 percent, according to the report.

Interim leader Roza Otunbayeva will be sworn in on Saturday as president of the Central Asian country.

Kyrgyzstan held a nationwide referendum Sunday on the new constitution, which particularly envisages a parliamentary democracy by diminishing presidential powers.

The referendum came only two weeks after ethnic clashes in the southern part of the country killed nearly 300 people and displaced tens of thousands.
