An official from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) on Monday called for public activities to force feuding factions of Hamas and Fatah to reconcile.

"We call for public moving and to stand in one front in the face of the two parts of the division and get out from the catastrophic situation the people live in," said Jameel Mezher, a Gaza-based PFLP leader.

Explaining his movement's rejection to meet Ismail Haneya, the deposed prime minister of the Hamas government in Gaza, Mezher said that "the PFLP considers the governments in Gaza and in Ramallah (the West Bank) a result of the split."

In 2007, Hamas routed security forces loyal to President Mahmoud Abbas and ousted his Fatah party, taking over the Gaza Strip and politically separating it from the West Bank.

On Saturday, Haneya canceled a meeting with leaders of other Palestinian factions in Gaza without explaining the details.

According to Mezher, the factions refused to meet Haneya "on his capacity as a premier," adding that the PFLP is ready to meet Haneya as a leader of Hamas movement.

"Haneya's government is unqualified to play a role in any project involving the national reconciliation," Mezher added.

In October, Egypt suspended its efforts to reconcile the rival factions after Hamas refused to sign a proposal.
