An earthquake with magnitude of 7.6 jolted West Sumatra province at Sumatra island on Wednesday, causing the collapse of a number of buildings, Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.

No tsunami warning has been issued so far. "We did not issue warning for tsunami as the quake was not potential for it," agency official Triono said.

According to the official, the quake struck at 17:16 Jakarta time (1216 GMT) with epicenter at 57 km southwest of Pariaman and at 71 km under sea bed.

"It is reported that scores of buildings and hotels have collapsed in Padang city," he said.

In Padang, the capital of West Sumatra, the intensity of the quake was felt the hardest, with 6 to 7 MMI (Modified Mercally Intensity), the official said.

The quake was felt up to Jakarta and some province in Sumatra Island such as Bengkulu and North Sumatra provinces, he said.

A 6.2 magnitude aftershock occurred at 12 minutes after the main shock, said Triono.
