A craze for traditional Chinese culture can be seen now in many countries. One testimony to this is the mushrooming number of "Confucius Institutes" being established around the world. That reflects a demand worldwide to learn Chinese language and culture. And a wide array of activities held in these Confucius Institutes have given rise to enthusiasm towards all things Chinese. Next we take a look at one such activity held in Jerusalem.

Students at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem were showered with traditional Chinese culture on the annual "Confucius Institute Day" held there on Wednesday. The school's library, where the event was held, was brimming with Chinese elements. Calligraphy, Chinese chess and Chinese zither-playing were just a few of the activities for students to take part in.

A lecture on Chinese philosophy was given, where students got to know the basic ideas behind the ancient philosophies of Yin and Yang, and Qi. The theme of the whole event was "The Chinese Way of Keeping Healthy". So learning these basics of Chinese philosophy helped students understand how Chinese keep healthy, by keeping balance in their bodies, and living harmoniously with nature.

There was also a martial arts demonstration performed by children. Chinese martial arts are believed to be both a way of defending against enemies and a way to stay healthy.

In another room, some students got to experience the traditional Chinese healing system of Qigong. It's a therapy using deep breathing, meditation and a set of movements to cultivate energy and cure diseases.

"The aim of the Confucius Institute Day at the University is to help more Israeli people get to know China, get in touch with China, know about the country's history and culture. To ignite their interest toward China. Today's event attracted many students, most of which were not Chinese majors," said Michal Kozlovich, student of Confucius Institute.

Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the most renowned university in Israel, was founded in 1925. It is the Alma Mater of eight Nobel prize winners. Although the Confucius Institute was not established there until 2014, Chinese language has been taught there for nearly 60 years, and their program has cultivated many talents in the field. The Confucius Institute will serve to further promote Chinese culture and strengthen friendship between the two countries.
