More than 30 countries' leaders have convened for the weekend Summit of the Americas in Colombia, to discuss trade relations and the potential legalisation of certain drugs, among other issues in the region.

In front of 300 of the top businessmen of the Americas, The President of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos confronted U.S. President Barack Obama, the question that has caused much debate... Is it possible to debate current drug policy to stem the rampant trafficking.

Juan Manuel Santos, Colombian President, said, " I think we have the obligation to analyse if we are doing the best we can, or if there are alternatives that could be more efficient. One extreme could be, we put all consumers in jail, the other extreme is to legalize, and in the middle there could be more practical policies."

However, it seems that legalization is not the answer for US.

Barack Obama, United States President, said, " Nevertheless I'm a big believer of looking at the evidence and having a debate. I think ultimately the way to solve this problem will be to both in the United States both dealing with demand in a more effective way. but it is also going to be strengthening institutions at home."

The American demand for illegal drugs has caused fierce bloodshed, plus political and economic turmoil, across much of the region.

The other troublesome issue for US, the long standing embargo on Cuba.

"In today's world this route is not justified it is an error, that has us stuck in the cold war, which we overcame decades ago." Juan Manuel Santos said.
