Migrant workers return home for festival

The busiest time of the year for China's roads, airports and railways is upon us with the arrival of this year the Spring Festival which falls on February 3rd. And as the festival approaches, many Chinese, especially migrant workers, travel home for a family reunion. This year the All China federation of Trade Unions has helped migrant workers in Beijing go home in any they can.

Xu Lei has been working in Beijing for more than two years. He and his father work at a construction side of the city's subway Line 10. He is in a hurry to get home because he also has a one-year-old daughter at home.

Xu said, "I feel excited. I don't see my family all year. I miss them a lot. This year, I earned more than 20 thousand yuan. It's OK."

This group of 200 migrant workers come from Hubei province, in central China. Currently, they all work on the newest section of subway line 10. Today, they will take the train home together. But, there are also a number of workers who are unabale to return home due to the busy construction schedule.

Zou Zhen, Official of All China Federation of Trade Unions, said, "This is peak travel season. For migrant workers, they worry quite a bit because the difficulties of buying a ticket to go home. We help to them solve this problem. We have been doing this for 4 years already. We will continue to help them."

At this construction site, trade unions prepared a series of activities for home-going workers. They include watching the latest films, giving them books and gifts.

Wang Jilin, migrant worker, said, "I go home every Spring Festival. This is the first time I take my grand-daughter with me. I feel excited. I will spend 20 days at home. In 2011, I hope Line 10 will be successfully completed."

China's annual Spring Festival travel rush started on January 19 and will last until February 27. For Chinese, it is the most important festival. Everyone wants to get home on time to celebrate the festival with their family members.

The majority of travelers are migrant workers and, this year, the number of rural passenger trips will rise more than 10 per cent. We wish the hard-working people a safe journey home and a Happy Spring Festival.
