Before the new traffic control package was unveiled, the auto-market had already witnessed rocketing sales. Rumors of sales limitations fueled speculation over impending car price rises. So what's the future of the automobile market in Beijing, in the light of the new congestion measures?

The end of the year is traditionally a busy season for car sales.

But recently, the market has gone just a little crazy.....

We went to visit a 4S shop in Beijing. The general manager told us they sold out all cars a week ago.

Deng Yulun, manager of Beijing Hanxin Auto Sales, said, "In the uncertain period leading up to the new rules, many people were panicked into buying a car, by the fear of rising prices."

A car buyer said, "It's really hard to buy a new car these days. There are no cars in any of the 4S shops. First they say you can get a car a week later; then tomorrow they say you can have it two weeks later."

A car buyer said, "I've always wanted to buy a car, but I didn't make my decision because of the price and for other reasons. This time, before the issue of the new rules, I bought a car without hesitation."

In 2010, more than 700,000 new cars were sold in Beijing, bringing the total number of automobiles in the capital to more than 4.7 million. These new congestion regulations are almost certain to have an impact on the market in 2011.

Deng Yulun said, "We anticipate that the number of car plates issued in 2010 will reach around 800,000. If we control the number at 2 to 3 hundred thousand, that's a reduction of around three quarters. It will impact on the whole of the car industry and related sectors."

From here on, the 26th day of each month will be a date to watch, for hopeful car buyers. They will have to draw lots to win the privilege of driving away in their new purchase. Meanwhile, those working in the auto industry await the fallout from these measures. Future adjustments may yet be needed to compensate, and maintain the development of the auto market.
