In New York, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has addressed a high-level UN meeting on Millennium Development Goals. He pledges China will provide further assistance to other developing countries in the global endeavor to get rid of poverty.

During his speech on Wednesday, Premier Wen Jiabao said over the past ten years, the lives of a huge number of people living in poverty have been improved, the dropout rate of school children has decreased, and more and more AIDS patients have received treatment, due to joint efforts made by the countries around the world.

But the premier notes there is still a long way to go to realize the Mellenium Development Goals as there are still imbalances in implementing relevant plans in different parts of the world.

Wen Jiabao, Chinese Premier, said, "Efforts in improving women and children's health, equality between men and women,as well as environmental protection have not seen significant progress in many countries. Many developing countries have been hit hard by the global financial, natural disasters and fluctuations on the food and energy markets. The number of people who suffer from hunger is increasing. We still have a long way to go to realize the Millennium Development Goals."

Wen Jiabao says China has made strong efforts in getting rid of poverty, realizing a universal primary education, and improving medical care in rural areas to make the MDGs to come true.

On the international front, Premier Wen Jiabao promises China will provide financial, medical and other forms of assistance to other developing countries. In the next three years, China will provide 14 million US dollars to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

He pledges that China will go further to reduce the debt to the least developed countries. By the end of 2009, China had written off 25.6 billion yuan of dedt for 50 heavily indebted poor countries.

China, in the meantime, will boost financial, trade, agricultural and other forms of cooperation with developing countries.

Premier Wen Jiabao also suggests that in the next five years, the UN should place the realization of the MDGs as its priority, and enhance support to the least developed countries, particularly those in Africa.

The world body should also perfect its role in international coordination and cooperation.

Wen Jiabao urges developed countries to fulfill their obligations to help developing countries.

Wen Jiabao, Chinese Premier, said, "The developed countries, as they have promised, must make concrete efforts to raise their amount of official aid to the developing countries to 0.7 percent of their national revenue. They should provide a long-term,stable and expectable financial aid to the developing countries without any conditions."

The Chinese premier points out that a stable and peaceful world is the precondition for global sustainable growth.

Different countries and ethnic groups must solve their disputes through peaceful means.
