Hundreds of thousands of people attended the annual Carnival of the Cultures in Berlin on Sunday. The colorful multi-ethnic parade celebrates cultural diversity in the German capital.

Berlin’s Carnival of Cultures (Karneval der Kulturen) is an annual street festival, taking place this year from 29th May to 1st June.

The event is traditionally held in the city's Kreuzberg district which has Berlin's biggest foreign population and Germany's largest Turkish community.

Most of the cultural minorities in and around Berlin take part in the parade, which involves musicians, dancers and floats depicting the country or the community. However, many also come from further afield.

The carnival is renowned for its party atmosphere as well as the cultural aspect.

A spectator said, "It's great, the parade, the colors, everything, even the weather!"

But at least one regular in the crowd was more critical.

A spectator said, "This year I'm not that impressed. I've been coming to watch it for twelve years and you can tell that some groups are lacking money."

According to the organizers, there were seven-hundred thousand spectators this year and 47-hundred participants in close to 100 groups contributed to the 13th Berlin Carnival of the Cultures.
