Japan, one of the most innovative countries in the world, is showcasing its latest cutting-edge technology at the ongoing Shanghai World Expo.

Resembling a living organism, the unique structure of the Japanese pavilion is a stunning innovation. It's draped by the world's first pillow membrane with built-in amorphous solar cells and an eco-tube system that can reduce the structure's environmental impact by making full use of natural energy including sunlight, wind and rainwater.

"The structure is very much eco-friendly, as future buildings might be," Hiroshi Tsukamoto, commissioner general of the Japan Pavilion, told China.org.cn in an exclusive interview.

Lying within the pavilion, Japanese companies display advanced technologies and innovations developed to address existing social and environmental problems.

Stealing the show is the humanoid robot developed by Toyota Motor Corporation, whose primary purpose is to assist the Japanese elderly as the country tackles the challenges of an aging population.

To the delight visitors, the robot plays the violin with its sophisticatedly designed fingers and arms.

Also on display are some of the country's latest environmentally friendly technologies, including machines that convert sewage water into drinking water and seawater into freshwater, floors that can generate electricity with the pressure of footsteps, electric cars, and CO2 capture and storage technology.
