As a nationally protected animal species, an individual takin, also known as cattle chamois or gnu goat, was spotted making appearance at the Dagu Glacier scenic area in Aba Tibetan and Qiang autonomous prefecture on May 31.

 

The goat-antelopes live in bamboo forests between 2,000 meters to 4,500 meters above sea level in eastern Himalayas, feeding on grasses, leaves, and flower buds.

 

The well preserved natural environment around Dagu Glacier offers a place for the wild animal species to grow in population. Occasionally they can be seen roaming along the cableway. In summer the diurnal animal form large groups of more than 100 individuals. Through older males mostly live on their own.

 

Other than takins, the scenic area is home to a rich variety of animal species, including the rare ones such as snub-nosed monkey and Tibetan macaque. Among the magnificent glacial landscape spread waterfalls, lakes, primitive forests and Rhododendron bushes, forming breathtaking views.
