Ningxia plans to celebrate the completion of a new riverfront landmark May 8. The China Yellow River Monument is expected to carry forward the Yellow River culture and boost the development of the area. Located at the Jinshawan Tourism Resort in Qingtongxia City, the monument contains an altar, a bronze tripod, a temple, a courtyard, two avenues lined with displays, three theme areas, three bridges and four grand sculptures. Twenty-four 9 meter-high pillars line both sides of one of the avenues. Each pillar is carved with one of the 24 solar terms, astronomical events used to demark time in the traditional lunisolar calendar. The monument is creative in many aspects, said Feng Qinduo, the chief designer and engineer of the structure. The exhibit brings an armillary sphere, seismograph, compass and sundial together in one place for the first time and uses bronze for its memorial archways. China Yellow River Monument is undoubtedly a cultural treasure, combining the collective wisdom of top experts in China, said Wang Zhengwei, chairman of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. He also said that Ningxia is going to develop the Monument into another top tourist destination like Sand Lake Scenic Spot and Shapotou Scenic Spot in the region. With an investment of nearly 180 million yuan ($ 27.7 million), work on the project started last May and finished in April of this year, completing the grand project in a miraculous 11 months.
