Singles' Day, an entertaining festival in the Chinese mainland, is popular among Chinese youth to celebrate being single.

In China, the Arabic numeral "1" can have the connotation of single, so November 11 (11/11) is Singles' Day.

The event celebrating singlehood was first celebrated in various universities in Nanjing, capital city of Jiangsu Province during the early 1990s. After these students graduated, they spread the tradition in the cities they worked in across the country.

Single males are called guang guang, single females are ming ming and when paired up as girlfriend and boyfriend, they are shuang shuang.

On November 11, singles often eat four youtiao or deep-fried dough sticks representing the four 1s in 11/11. In the evening, singles attend parties to celebrate the day, while some choose to say goodbye to their single lives on Singles' Day if they are getting married soon.
