As a world's leading supplier of green solutions, AU Optronics Corp. (AUO) was established in 2001 by the merger of Acer Display Technology, Inc. (the former of AUO formed in 1996) and Unipac Optoelectronics Corporation AU Optronics Corp.

In 2006, it merged with Quanta Display Inc. to create a larger TFT-LCD manufacturer with a leading position in the world's TFT-LCD market. AUO is the first TFT-LCD manufacturer to be successfully listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). AUO extended its market to the green energy industry in late 2008. The display and solar businesses were established as the company's two core businesses in 2010.

AUO generated NT$379.7 billion (US$12.89 billion) in sales revenue in 2011 and now houses a staff of more than 43,000 throughout its global operations, distributed across Taiwan, the Chinese mainland and foreign countries including Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the U.S. plus several European countries.
