Manchester United played with 10 men for over an hour before knocking Arsenal out of the third round of the FA Cup following a penalty shootout at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

The result is a huge morale boost for coach Ruben Amorim and his side, but is another blow for Arsenal, who lost the first leg of their Carabao Cup semifinal 2-0 at home to Newcastle United earlier in the week.

Arsenal had chances, but some poor finishing, especially from Kai Havertz, ended up being very costly for Mikel Arteta's side.

Manchester United looked very solid and took the lead in the 52nd minute when Bruno Fernandes finished from Alejandro Garnacho's cross.

Things got complicated for United in the 61st minute when Diogo Dalot dived in on Mikel Merino and was sent off for a second yellow card, to leave the visitors with 10 men, and things got worse just two minutes later when Gabriel Magalhaes scored after goalkeeper Altay Bayindir failed to punch a cross clear.

Bayindir would soon redeem himself with a series of fine saves, including a 69th-minute penalty taken by Martin Odegaard and an effort from Declan Rice that looked destined for the corner of the goal.

The Turkish goalkeeper was also the hero in the shootout saving Havertz's spot kick to give United a massive win.

Tottenham was made to suffer away to fifth-tier Tamworth, who took their tie into extra time and held the Premier League outfit 0-0 until the 101st minute when Nathan Tshikuna saw the ball go into his own net following a goalmouth scramble.

Dejan Kulusevski and Brennan Johnson scored in the closing minutes to secure Tottenham's win.

Newcastle United also had some nervous moments as they fell behind at home to fourth-division Bromley, who led thanks to Cameron Congreve's eighth-minute goal.

Bromley's dreams of glory lasted until 18-year-old Lewis Miley drilled home just eight minutes later, with an Anthony Gordon penalty and William Osula's debut goal assuring the game for the Magpies.

Ipswich Town had no such trouble and put their relegation battle behind them with a comfortable 3-0 win at home to Bristol Rovers, with Kalvin Phillips, Jack Clarke and Jack Taylor putting them 3-0 up by halftime.

Crystal Palace did just enough to win their tie at home to Stockport County, with Eberechi Eze netting the only goal of the game in the fourth minute.

The day's upset came when Championship side Hull City was knocked out after a penalty shootout at home to League Two's Doncaster Rovers after their match ended 1-1 after extra time.

On Saturday, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, Nottingham Forest, Leicester City, Brighton and Bournemouth all had few problems in getting past lower league rivals, but Brentford was the victim of an upset, losing 1-0 at home to Championship strugglers Plymouth.
