Jose Mourinho's side came through a potentially difficult test with flying colors, winning 5-1 win away to Osasuna on Saturday night.

Madrid led 3-0 by the break thanks to magnificent goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain. Benzema and Ronaldo's goals were especially spectacular as Benzema hit a volley from a narrow angle and Ronaldo hit a powerful shot from long range

Nino pulled a goal back for Osasuna,, but further goals from Ronaldo and Higuain sealed the win.

Barcelona meanwhile defeated a tired Athletic Club Bilbao to win 2-0 in the Camp Nou Stadium.

Athletic had played just 47 hours before Saturday's game and were lacking their usual spark with several key players rested. Andres Iniesta opened the scoring five minutes from half time and Leo Messi took advantage of a gift from referee Mateu Lahoz to make it 2-0 from the penalty spot.

Malaga's hopes of finishing in the top three suffered a blow as they lost 2-0 at home to Betis. Goals from Ruben Castro and Jose Dorado before the break gave Betis a shock win and stopped Malaga moving third.

Saturday also saw Zaragoza continue with remarkable recovery as a 91st minute goal from Angel Lafita gave them a 2-1 win away to Sporting Gijon.

Helder Postiga had put Zaragoza ahead after 36 minutes only for Sebastian Eguren to level four minutes after the break, but Lafita gave his side their 13th point from six games with a goal late in the game.

Meanwhile an 89th minute penalty from Granada defender Siqueira gave his side a 1-0 win away to a Racing Santander side that looks condemned to relegation.

Atletico Madrid kicked off on Sunday with a 3-0 home win against Getafe. The win keeps Atletico in the hunt for a place in Europe thanks to goals from Eduardo Salvio. Diego and Radamal Falcao.

Valencia were unable to open a gap over their rivals for third place as they were held 1-1 at home to local rivals Levante. Jonas Goncalves opened the scoring for Valencia, while Levante leveled in the second half thanks to striker Aruna Kone. Valencia have taken just one point from their last three games and were booed off the pitch by their ever-demanding fans.

Real Sociedad ended a mini-crisis with a comfortable win at home to Rayo Vallecano. David Zuruturza, Imanol Agirretxe, Antoine Griezmann and Carlos Vela all scored in a 4-0 win that takes the pressure off coach Philippe Montanier in the wake of last week's poor display against Real Madrid.

Finally Villarreal continue to flirt with danger following a 0-0 draw at home to Espanyol. The club can, however, take comfort from the fact that they are unbeaten in three games since the arrival of Miguel Angel Lotina as coach.
